At 22 years old, Jim Smith founded the present day Real Estate Company, Jim Smith & Associates, Inc., REALTORS. He has extensive experience in residential listing and sales, marketing commercial Real Estate, land and farms, developing and building residential communities and selling Real Estate at Auction. He graduated from the University of South Carolina Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and in Finance in 1972, earning a number of academic honors and has a aggressively pursued advanced professional training related to developing and marketing Real Estate.

Those efforts include achieving the GRI Designation, 1975, CRB Designation in 1985, Who's Who in America in Real Estate, in 1981 the Certified Auctioneer's Institute Designation. In 1988, the Accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate Designation in 1990. Jim is a member of the Spartanburg, South Carolina and National Association of REALTORS and the South Carolina and National Association of Auctioneers. He completed the South Eastern School of Auctioneering in 1985 and course work for Raw Land Syndications in 1976, Advanced Syndication Techniques in 1978, Office Building Management in 1981, the Karras Negotiating Seminar in 1991. Jim has been published by "Real Estate Today, the South Carolina REALTOR, The Auctioneer, The Bid Caller and numerous other professional journals and trade peroidatic He served as an Instructor on the Academic and the Continuing Education Faculties of the University of South Carolina Upstate, for Electronic Realty Associates, and as a Seminar Presenter and a keynote speaker for the National Auctioneers Association in major cities across America. 

His company, Carolina Auction Team, Inc. successfully sold Real Estate at Auction in locations from Charlottesville to Pensacola., West Palm Beach, & Sarasota to Nashville and Memphis and in hundreds of locations across the Carolinas and Georgia. Properties sold include vacant and improved Commercial sites and buildings, Plantations, Condominiums, single family homes, shopping centers, Islands, Resort property and subdivisions, The firm has conducted numerous multimillion dollar transactions with sale attendance by thousands of bidders from most states in America and numerous Foreign Countries. Jim has served as a Consultant to Real Estate Auction Firms from Georgia to Texas to Pennsylvania. He organized and promoted the largest two auctions of raw land in Western NC history, the 
largest land and condo Auction in North Georgia, sold stadium condominiums and builder close out transactions. 
He has been the Senior Developer in residential communities such as Farm Lake in Boiling Springs and Johnson's Point and Thorn Cove on Lake Blalock, Sunset Harbor and Amber Shores on Lake Bowen, Camp Skyuka on White Oak Mountain, Up Country Industrial Park, the 3300 acre Lake Adger communities, the 700 acre Green River Farms fronting the Green River in Polk County, White's Lake in Saluda and numerous other communities. 

Jim is a born again Christian of the Baptist Faith & supports several Christian Ministries. 
He was an Eagle Scout at 13 years old, Troop 19, is a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge # 70 AFM and has served numerous Civic Organizations. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from USC Upstate in 2012.Jim is dedicated to his family and has two wonderful children who grew up on the family farm and in the Real Estate Business. Rachel Smith Yelton (Pastor Bryan Yelton) and Missy Smith Gentry, (Russ Gentry), Six wonderful Grandchildren, Jimmy Yelton (Morgan), now associated with the firm, Mary Melissa Shields (Dr. Caleb Shields), a school teacher, Ana Claire, a rising Senior at North Greenville University, Russell Gentry, a Freshman at Carolina, his twin sister Rachel Elizabeth Gentry, a Freshman at Clemson and Clinton Gentry, a Rising High School Sophmore. He also has two wonderful Great Grandchildren, Leland Yelton and Evie Shields. Jim operates the family cattle farm, drove dirt track race cars, participated in the Rodeo business. He raised and trained an AKC Champion Belgian Tervuren and a National Champion Palomino Weaning Filly. A lifelong horseman, he taught dozens of young people the art, skill and pleasure of horsemanship. He endowed a scholarship in the memory of his Mother in the Nursing Department at USC Upstate and a scholarship in the School of Business also at USC Upstate.
